Parent Coaching
Raising children in today’s ever-changing world can feel overwhelming. Balancing academics, friendships, extracurricular activities, and family life presents unique challenges. Parent coaching is a goal-oriented process designed to help parents develop personalized strategies for navigating parenting challenges, building effective communication skills, and fostering stronger relationships with their children.
Coaching differs from traditional therapy or counselling in that it is more focused on specific goals. In traditional therapy, you might spend weeks exploring and discussing your identity as a parent. In contrast, with parenting coaching, you select a specific goal—such as helping your child complete their homework without a daily tantrum—and I provide advice and support utilizing proven techniques to help you achieve the desired outcomes.
Areas of Focus Include:
- Communication Issues
- Behavioural Challenges
- Emotional Challenges
- Substance Abuse
- Setting effective boundaries
- Parental Self-Care & Well-being
- Divorce & Separation
- Strengthening co-parenting
What to expect in Parent Coaching
Parent coaching is practical, applicable at the time, skills-based and very specific to ‘parenting’. As each parenting situation is different and unique, all advice and guidance is personalized for your situation.
Coaching Sessions are focused on the following areas:
- Skill-Based Learning: We’ll explore strategies and tools that can help you achieve your parenting goals, such as managing child behaviour, setting healthy boundaries, and improving communication
- Collaborative Support: Coaching is a collaborative process offering guidance, encouragement, and accountability.
- Managing Behavioural Challenges: You’ll learn skills to help you deal with tantrums, discipline, and other common issues with children of all ages.
- Practical Application: You’ll be assigned “homework” or “between-session” exercises to help build on topics discussed in your sessions.
- What do you want your relationships with your children to feel like now and ten years from now?
- Start building skills to address your parenting challenges.
At first, it may be hard to talk about past experiences or current concerns. Sessions may stir up intense emotions. It is possible to experience feelings of upset, anger, or sadness during treatment. However, parent coaching can help people build confidence and become more comfortable as sessions progress.
Length of Therapy
The duration of therapy can vary significantly based on your unique circumstances and goals. It’s understandable to want to know how long it may take to start feeling better. However, it’s essential to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Each person’s journey is unique, and taking the time you need is perfectly acceptable.
